Full Home Water Filtration Systems
Using a whole house water filtration system will give you bottled
water quality water from every faucet in your house. Your skin will feel
softer after bathing because harmful chemicals are removed from the water,
and you won’t be inhaling gaseous chemicals while showering or running the
dish washer. Whole house water filtration systems can handle a much larger
water flow than just a filter sitting on your countertop. Some of the
benefits of using a whole house filter is it can remove sediments as well
as bad tastes and odors. Sediments can cause havoc with your appliances,
so hooking up a whole house filtration system can save a lot of wear and
tear on your washer, dryer, hot water heater, and more.
Chlorine is removed from the
water as it enters the water main, so it never enters the house itself.
Chlorine can form chloroform gas from such everyday activities as taking a
shower and flushing the toilet. Inhaling chloroform can lead to
respiratory problems like bronchitis and asthma.When showering, chloroform
can be absorbed through the skin right into the bloodstream. Other
dangerous chemicals can be taken into the body through unfiltered water as
well that can lead to cancer and other health risks. Some of those

Solar Pool Heaters
Solar pool heating is one of the simplest yet the most cost-effective
use of solar energy in many climates. Water is pumped from the pool to the
solar collectors where the water is warmed by the sun. The warm water is
then pumped back into the swimming pool allowing you to enjoy your pool
for many months, and in some areas all year long. The many benefits of
having solar pool heating include: increasing the average temperature
15-20º, having no operating costs, no pollution and no fuel needed, last
20+ years, minimal maintenance required.
Having a solar pump can cut
the power use of your pool. A pool pump runs on DC power from a nearby
solar panel. If the pump does not have a backup battery system (which adds
to setup costs) it can be connected to your grid power supply for a
"no-sun" backup. The same applies for nighttime pool use - if you need to
run the pump at night, then connection to the home’s AC supply is
recommended. Depending on your pool pumping installation, a solar pool
pump system can payoff in a few short years (typically about 4 years).
After that, your power costs are basically zero unless you use backup
power. Any backup power usage is usually quite short compared to full
daytime pump use and any additional grid power usage is quite small in
comparison.
Solar Water Heaters
There are many benefits to owning a solar water heater, and number one
is economics. Solar water heater economics compare quite favorably with
those of electric water heaters, while the economics aren’t quite so
attractive when compared with those of gas water heaters. Heating water
with the sun also means long-term benefits, such as being cushioned from
future fuel shortages and price increases, and environmental benefits.
Many home builders choose
electric water heaters because they are easy to install and relatively
inexpensive to purchase. However, research shows that an average household
with an electric water heater spends about 25% of its home energy costs on
heating water. It makes economic sense to think beyond the initial
purchase price and consider lifetime energy costs, or how much you will
spend on energy to use the appliance over its lifetime. Recent government
studies found that solar water heaters offered the largest potential
savings, with solar water-heater owners saving as much as 50% to 85%
annually on their utility bills over the cost of electric water heating!
With very aggressive state and federal rebates factoring into the
equation, this may be the best and most cost-effective time to add a solar
water heater to your home!
